April is IBS Awareness Month!

Did you know that April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Awareness Month? I mention it because so often IBS is not talked about because it can make people feel uncomfortable, on both sides of the conversation. The more we talk about it, the more awareness there will be and the better things will be for those living with IBS.

I bet someone you know, if not you, has IBS. It is one of the often overlapping conditions with fibromyalgia. One in Seven people in the U.S. has IBS. Personally, three of my female friends (that I know in person) have IBS. They had it before I even did/knew I did. Unfortunately, IBS is one of those conditions that not only effects those with IBS, but also those that have a relationship with them. In fact, a recent study showed that it has as much or more of an impact on the lives of partners dealing with a spouse who has dementia or advanced cancer.

The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders has some great resources available online: a brochure, poster, infographic and lots of info. They’re also sharing daily tips on Twitter and Facebook. On Twitter, @bbolenibs is one of my favorite people who tweet about IBS. She is a doctor and writes for about.com. I’ve mentioned it before, but the University of North Carolina Center for Functional GI & Motility Disorders holds excellent “Evening with the Experts” webniar presentations with chatrooms. They are held the first Tuesday of each month, starting at 8pm EST.

Another way to participate is to get involved with some research studies. The more scientists understand IBS, the better treatments there will be! There are many types of studies and some can even be done online and over the phone. IFFGD has an ongoing list of studies.

Do you think you’ll be doing anything in honor of IBS Awareness Month?

I did not know that this month was IBS month! Unfortunately I’ve had this beast since I was a kid..10, 11 years old. Almost 30 years later I’m still miserable, no cure, no meds that help, and agonizing flareups with little to no warning. We definitely need some awareness brought up in here! It was only after reading about the link b/t IBS and fibro that I thought I might have fibro too, and ergo got my fibro diagnosis after 15 years of suffering! These docs need to get it together!

Wow, that is incredible that you found the missing link that helped you get a proper diagnosis! I love hearing stories like that., but obviously not the part where it took 15 years!
