The MD took me seriously when I showed him the “Fibromyalgia for Dummies” book, and had highlighted all areas that pertained to me. He listened and we discussed lots. He is now in the process of eliminating other problem areas with blood tests, has changed some meds, and has said he believes me, but, will do testing first.

Wonderful! It is good to make sure nothing else is going on other than fibromyalgia, since many of the symptoms mimic other things.

Hi Katey,

I know you say you have tried medication but you don’t mention anything specific, I can only go by my own experience but Amitriptolene has been the only thing that helps me, although not always and it does make you a bit groggy in the daytime especially the first couple of hours after waking.
Paul.

OMG! I have this… I had a really bad fall in Sept 2009, Jan 2011 I woke up with severe sensitivity and the only way I can explain it is like getting out of the ocean. I hate salt water on my skin or sand and this is like that all the time. My muscles are sore and achy. I am tired. I am not myself since the fall and I wonder if this is it. My own Orthopedic never heard of my systems. I had MRI’s, nerve test etc. I am going to look at what I can do to relieve this. It’s a nightmare to me. I want it to go away. I wish us all peace with this and hopefully they can come up something to fix it…..OMG! I am going to call all my doctors tomorrow. I can’t understand why non of them mentioned this too me. I just read this article on LifeScript. Thanks to that maybe I can find some help and relief. It seems no one believes me…….

Many doctors don’t receive training on fibromyalgia and the ones that do don’t get much. The first doctor that mentioned the condition to me told me to go home and read about it since he didn’t know much about it. I hope that now that you’re honed in on a condition that is similar to your symptoms you’re able to get a diagnosis and some relief! Good luck!

I am 15 years old and last November the day after my birthday, my dotor ran tests, did the run of the mill things. After a confused look, he shakely told me I have fibromyalgia and also hypermobility. At the time I was having great amounts of trouble with my knees to the point of being forced to use a wheelchair. I have lived with what my doctors call chronic depression, anxiety, and also just a crapy life. All of which they think triggered it. My main conplaint has always been sleep. Some days I can go days without sleep or be so tired I literally sleep for days. Along side of that, I have numb tingling toes, horrifying back pain, headaches, vision loss, the list goes on to cover almost all of the symptoms. I guess the point of all this is that living with such an illness at such a young age hurts. Its so crazy for adults to understand, how can teenagers understand whats going on? My friends know most of what I deal with but they dont understnad. Really I dont understand. I guess I just hate this right now. But I have sat here and read almost all of your blog in tears. No one has bothered to even give me half of which you so clearly explain. Thank you so much and God bless.

I teared up reading your comment because I can really relate to how you’re feeling, as I felt similarly at 19 years old. I’m so glad that some of what I’ve written has been helpful to you because when I was new to my fibromyalgia diagnosis I had such a hard time finding first hand, positive, information about it. As far as friends go I’ve found that new friends seem to grasp how fibromyalgia effects me more than people who knew me for years before I had fibromyalgia. I want to share a post with you that I wrote looking back on how I interacted with friends about activities: http://feliciafibro.com/2011/04/04/our-attitude-sets-the-playing-field/ I hope you’re able to find some solutions to help you get better sleep! *hugs* Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

My name is also, ironically, Felicia. I was recently indirectly diagnosed. I probably had this for years, but all of my symptoms intensified after my ex-husband wanted a divorce out of the blue. I have Raynoud’s, mouth and eye dryness, skin sensitivities as well as difficulty seeing at night, intolerance to strong smells, and instantaous headaches with a lot of noise. Also, I have had extreme fatigue, IBS, Acid-Reflux, chronic neck and back pain, insomnia, numb fingers and toes, tingling in extremities, and the achy flu-like feeling often along with stabbing or dull aching pain everywhere. Yeah, I am practically a poster child for this. My symptoms were so bad last September that I first went to a Rheumatologist who tested me for everything. While I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus antibodies in my blood, nothing was significant enough. He did not believe that Fibro existed. He told me there is no real test for it and he bets that many in the medical profession regret even coming up with this “general term”. Finally, a neurologist and a pain management specialist began to help me. I am on nerve blockers, Cymbalta, and I am now getting pain injection shots as well as using pain meds when necessary. So many people still do not know what Fibromylagia is. I started putting up posters of info in my classroom (I am a Spanish teacher). This has been so difficult for me because I am also a third-degree black belt, a kickboxing instructor, an avid hiker, and have a strong Type A personality. I am going to try Tai-Chi in May, but it is the the same. I have difficulty accepting that I need to pick and choose what I do in life to avoid being in terrible pain the next day, weeks, or months. I thank you for this wonderful website. I will post about it on my FB page :) Sorry to everyone who has this – it can be a bitch at times. Hang in there!

I was diagnosed in may and my Dr gave me Tramadol and Effexor and a muscle relaxer. I had to go to the Dr yesterday because the people I work with and my family were beginning to worry about me because I was acting weird and like I was loosing my mind. She said that Tramadol will do that!!! I told her to get me off of it, I’d rather be in pain then be crazy!! So she started me on Gabbapentin instead….I guess I’ll wait and see if it was the Tramadol and I’m really not loosing it, LOL.

Light Sensitivity has been very hard to overcome ,
from supermarkets to the workplace. Light sensitivity turns to anxiety ! ( especially on rainy damp days ) Zero tolerance for noise also.
My NP has recommended B 12 shots.
The symptoms almost at times make me feel like I am in a different zone ( scary )
I also have a severe case of TMJ which creates a very debilitating situation !
I use to have a great up beat personality ready to challenge the world to this , which very often makes me very irritable .
