Easier Entertaining

To many with fibromyalgia, the thought of entertaining is exhausting enough to decide against it. In this post I hope to share some tips to make entertaining easier. Some of the first choices you make when planning a party have the most impact on your night of fun. For instance, what day will you be entertaining and what will the attire be? I have found Saturday to be the best day for me to entertain because I can rest on Friday, entertain on Saturday and cleanup and rest on Sunday. I set a fairly casual attire so that I can be more comfortable while cooking, serving and entertaining and so that I won’t feel too odd wearing my Orthaheel Orthotic Slippers, which help my feet handle all the standing.

Once the main details are set, send out an evite ~4 weeks ahead to let your guests know about the party and get an RSVP count. You can also use Facebook events to send out invitations. These devices save a lot of time, energy and paper over snail mail invitations. 1-2 weeks before the party try to buy any nonperishable foods and drink and do any decorating. It is nice to get that out of the way and be able to conserve more energy closer to the event. To avoid entertaining stress and forgetting things (due to Fibro Fog), make lists for any items you need to purchase or tasks you need to complete.

The day before your party make any dishes ahead that you can. Later in the evening leave ample time to get a good night’s rest before your big day. The day of your party make sure to take plenty of breaks while getting ready. Earlier in the day, try to do as much mis en place as possible. This includes cleaning and cutting food, getting pans out, etc… Consider getting all dolled up ~4 hours early. This is so you can sit and rest after getting ready, before the cooking and last minute things need to start happening.

Set up a beverage station where people can refill their drinks so they won’t have to come to you for things like more water. It is much easier to keep tabs on if your water pitcher needs refilled than if 20 glasses do! For opening wine, the Metrokane Rabbit Corkscrew Wine Bottle Opener is much easier on fingers, hands and wrists than traditional wine openers. I love mine! While entertaining try to use as much dishwasher safe tableware as you can. It makes clean up SO much easier! You can start a dishwasher load before crashing into bed and in the morning it’ll be ready to unload, reload and run again! This is so important to me, that even my china is dishwasher safe. Another option would be to use disposable tableware, there are some great options made of recycled materials nowadays.

How do you make entertaining easier?
